Berlin runs on the Berliner Schnauze: blunt, fast, ironic — “Schnauze mit Herz,” a big mouth with a warm heart underneath. Don’t mistake directness for rejection; a dry remark aimed at you is often inclusion, and false politeness reads as insincere here. Ask direct questions, answer directly, skip the warm-up acts.
The English bubble is real — in Kreuzberg, Neukölln and Mitte you can live whole weeks in English — but that’s exactly why a little German lands so well: it’s unexpected. “Na?” is a complete greeting, ordering in German earns visible goodwill, and your accent is charm, not handicap. Use the bubble for comfort, break it for effect.
The city is faster and flakier than the rest of Germany: plans are made loosely, people are passing through, and “let’s hang out sometime” is weather talk.
